This archaeological site was discovered by Dragoslav Srejović 40 years ago. According to world's largest and best-known archaeologists and anthropologists, Lepenski Vir is the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century in Europe and one of the most important in the world, it is one of the most important and most complex prehistoric culture. The world famous resorts and residential and religious buildings that were built in that area in period about 6500 BC to the 5500 BC, as well as sculptures from the 7th millennium BC, dedicated to the figure of the sun god. Lepenski vir was explored in the late 60's of last century, as part of large safety studies related to the construction of Iron Gate Dam. It is not expected to be below the small Neolithic settlement found carefully planned buildings, tombs that point to specific rituals, a variety of objects made of bone, horn and stone and monumental stone sculptures. Further studies showed that Lepenski Vir can be considered the center of a specific and long-term Mesolithic culture, one of the most complex and intriguing European cultures. At the heart of the village there was a wide square, which was the place of various rituals. Based on the shape and proportions of habitat can be established that the builders of Lepenski Vir possessed some mathematical knowledge. Around the hearth were placed statues of large pebbles representing the human figure which was originally designed only the head.
